In a year’s time, many contemporary Urdu verses by poets could soon be in the reach of Hindi readers. Likewise, similar verses coined by Hindi poets can be read by Urdu lovers.
Two NGOs, who work separately to promote Hindi and Urdu, have joined hands to ensure that the depth of work in each language can be shared by literature lovers. To ensure this, they will be translating works of the contemporary poets and writers free of cost.
“We are ensuring that at least one book in each of the language is brought out by next year,” said Zubair Azmi of Urdu Markaz, that runs and promotes Urdu from a small room provided in a municipal school in Imambada. The group will undertake this programme under the umbrella of the Hindi-Urdu Manch.
Poets whose work will be first taken for translation from Urdu to Hindi are Abdul Ahad Zaad, Dr Rafia Shabnam Abidi (both of whom have won the Maharashtra state award for Urdu poetry) and Shamim Tariq.
Poets whose work will be translated from Hindi to Urdu include Dev Mani Pandey, Sumita Keshwa and Rakesh Ranjan. All of them are considered popular in the local poet gatherings that are held in the city.
“The Manch was formed when the two NGOs participated in mushairas and shairis that were organised. It was that time when we decided to have a greater confluence of the language,” said Santosh Shrivastav, who runs the Hemant Foundation, which has won the Vasantrao Naik Pratishthan Puraskar.
“We took the initiative in the memory of my son, who was a good poet but died in accident,” added Shrivastav.
“Urdu and Hindi are like twin sisters who are joined not just in their head but also their heart. No surgical operation can divide this unity. This initiative is to share and bring back the culture of sharing the depth of writing in both languages,” said Zaad.
Azmi said that they shall include dramas and other works in Urdu and Hindi once the poems are translated.
